The Bermuda Diabetes Association (BDA), in collaboration with CARNA Health, is excited to offer a Free Chronic Kidney Disease Screening to the public on September 12th.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) often goes undetected until it reaches more severe stages, making early detection and treatment crucial for maintaining good health.

Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) occurs when the kidneys are damaged and do not function properly. This can be due to disease, injury, or aging. Early detection and treatment are crucial as they can slow down or prevent further kidney damage and related complications.

Why Screening is Important

CKD often shows no symptoms until it reaches advanced stages. In Bermuda, only 7% of CKD cases are diagnosed at early stages (1 or 2), while 20% are found at more severe stages (4 or 5). Early detection is essential to manage and treat CKD effectively.

Who Should Get Screened?

If you have any of the following conditions, you should consider getting your kidneys checked:

• Diabetes
• High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
• Cardiovascular Disease
• Previous episodes of acute kidney injury
• Gout
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Family history of kidney disease
